I am trying to record my voice using a microphone plugged into my sound card. All I get is my voice coming through the internal computer speaker and not recording. I do have the microphone plugged into the correct socket.
I think the Windows mixer panel probably deserves an award for bad user interface design, judging by the number of questions we get about it. When you select Open Volume Controls from the taskbar icon it is the playback (or Master Out) controls that appear. These controls only affect what is played through the speaker.
To adjust the recording levels you have to click on Options, Properties and then select Adjust volume for Recording. You will then see a different (but very similar looking) set of controls that determine the recording level. It's best to mute the inputs you aren't using to stop extraneous noises being recorded along with your voice.
